Approximately 35% to 45% of the heat that leaves your home does so through the walls. The actual amount you save by having external insulation depends on the number of outer walls. Obviously if you’ve an apartment or mid-terrace house you’ve only one external wall, but an end-of terrace or semi-detached home has heat leaking out on three sides.
External Wall Insulation involves fixing insulating materials such as mineral wool or expanded polystyrene slabs to the outer surface of the wall. The insulation is then covered with a special render to provide weather resistance. A steel or fibreglass mesh is embedded in this render to provide strength and impact resistance. Grants are available from the SEAI.
Other benefits of external insulation include preventing rain penetration, correcting poor air-tightness or frost damage can be solved, provided that the product is NSAI Agrement certified.
